An innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum that provides a creative vehicle for imagining a more just and equitable world…

Got My Wings is a performance and educational project that began as a ballet inspired by the life and writings of Jarvis Jay Masters, an innocent man on death row. Set to an original score performed by composer/saxophonist Daniel Blake, the piece was choreographed by Tomiko Magario and featured an ensemble from Westchester Ballet Company. The work received its premier in January 2022 at Bethany Arts Community, with support from Arts Westchester, and was again performed in 2023 with the support of Creative Alliance Project.

Got My Wings has since evolved into an educational workshop that helps students and teachers utilize the arts as a way to explore some of society’s most difficult questions. With support from Humanities New York, and in partnership with Rehabilitation Through the Arts and the youth and community organization ENUBuilds, Got My Wings implemented a series of workshops for high school students and their teachers in 2022 and 2023. In addition to the work’s creators, these workshops were joined and co-facilitated by celebrated author and spoken word artist Thomas Ray, visual artist and public speaker Darrian Bennett, and movement artist Diego Lucano. The workshop and ballet received critical support from Jarvis Jay Masters through a series of virtual appearances and recorded phone interviews.

Education Workshops

Students from Briarcliff Manor, Sleepy Hollow, Ossining High School travel to Bethany Arts Community. Guest appearance by Caged Birds, co-facilitated by Thomas Ray, Darrian Bennett and Diego Lucano.

In Fall 2022, Got My Wings received a “Quick Grant” from Humanities New York to pilot an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum where students and educators could think about criminal justice and incarceration through creative and performing arts. The program was a great success, leading to a full round of funding from Humanities New York to implement an expanded program in Fall 2023 co-facilitated by composer/performer and project director Daniel Blake, author and community organizer Thomas Ray, artist and public speaker Darrian Bennett and choreographer Tomiko Magario. The program impacted over 100 students and educators over four workshops, in-school visits, and professional development workshops for educators and community members from Ossining, Tarrytown and Briarcliff Manor school districts.

Got My Wings brings together a coalition of institutional partners including Rehabilitation Through the Arts, youth and community organization ENUBuilds, Westchester Ballet Company, and Bethany Arts Community. See this handout for more detail.
